Monks Swat Hornets, 4-2

Box Score

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Saint Joseph's College (10-4-1, 5-2 GNAC) defeated Lyndon State College (1-13-0, 0-7-0 NAC), 4-2, in a non-conference men's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon. Freshman forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) netted a pair of goals in the victory.

Mattos picked up his first goal in the 13th minute off a rebound from a Jesse Ramirez (Dumont, N.J.) shot.  Mattos would strike again twenty minutes later in the 33rd minute off a Nate Fox (South Portland, Maine) assist.  In the 43rd minute, Kartikeya Swarup (Delhi, India) gained possession at the top of the box and blasted a shot into the top right of the goal for the eventual game-winning goal.

Down 3-0 to start the second half, the Hornets struck quickly in the 50th minute as senior Blake Begnoche moved the ball up to Ricky Carroll who placed the ball in the net to cut the lead to two.

Both teams continued to battle and make advances up the field to no avail until Ramirez pushed the Monks' lead back up to three off an Austin Bell (Gorham, Maine) assist.

The Hornets kept fighting though and in the 86th minute Liam Kelleher led Devin Cowan toward the net who kicked the ball around charging keeper Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho), making the score 4-2.

Senior Jason Pelkey took the loss in net for the Hornets, finishing with nine saves in 85 minutes of work.

Benner made two saves to pick up the win in net for the Monks.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's reached the double-digit victory mark for the seventh time in program history and sixth in the last eight seasons. The Monks are now 4-13 all-time against Lyndon State College, a program Saint Joseph's had not played since 2007 prior to this afternoon's matchup.

The Hornets travel to play Green Mountain College on Tuesday at 3:30 PM.  The Monks host Norwich University on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
