Mattos Brace Helps Push Monks Past Owls, 4-1

Box Score

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Freshman forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore forward Austin Bell (Gorham, Maine) chipped in with a pair of assists to help Saint Joseph's College (5-3-0) defeat University of Maine-Presque Isle (1-8-0) on Friday afternoon.

Mattos kicked off the game scoring in the eighth minute, with Bell claiming the assist, but the host-Owls responded just over eight minutes later when Sean Borbosa scored off a Derek Healy feed. Freshman midfielder Jeremy Caruso (Pembroke, N.H.) netted the eventual game-winner at the 39:07 mark and Bell was credited with an assist on the clincher.

With 52 seconds left in the first half, Mattos added his second marker of the day off a Caruso dish and first-year forward Tyler St. Pierre (Gray, Maine) potted his first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally, at the 52:36 mark, capping the scoring ledger with the Monks firmly in the lead, 4-1.

In goal, freshman Zack Moody (Steep Falls, Maine) collected his first NCAA win after making three saves in his first career start. UMPI keepers Caleb Bragg-Grady (73:40) and Matthew Manter (16:20) shared time in goal and combined to make 13 saves in the losing effort.

Overall, Saint Joseph's held decided advantages in both shots (28-14) and corner kicks (12-2) in the triumph.

Saint Joseph's returns to action tomorrow with a 12:00 PM conference contest at home versus Anna Maria College.

BEYOND THE BOX:

  • With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 14-10-1 all-time versus Presque Isle and has now defeated the Owls in five-consecutive meetings
  • Today's triumph is the Monks' third-straight win and counts as the first time the SJC men's side has won three in a row since the 2013 team won seven straight
  • St. Pierre is the 13th different SJC player to net a goal this fall – only one St. Joe's team (2008, 15) has had more players find the back of the net in the same season
  • Eight different players scored for the Royal Blue last year
  • With the win over Presque-Isle, the Monks match last season's win total

UP NEXT:

  • Saint Joseph's is 4-0 in the history of the matchup with Anna Maria College and defeated the AMCATS, 1-0, in Paxton, Massachusetts last fall
  • Anna Maria enters tomorrow's contest with an 0-5-1 record, including an 0-2 mark in GNAC play
  • The AMCATS fell to Mass.-Maritime, 2-0, in their last game, which was played on their home turf on Wednesday
