Monks Sweep Polar Bears in Non-Conference Twin Bill

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (17-11, 10-4 GNAC) posted a pair of victories over Bowdoin College (14-13-2, 4-5 NESCAC) in non-conference softball action at Richard W. Bailey Field on Tuesday evening. The Monks defeated the Polar Bears by a 5-2 score in the opener and rounded out the sweep with a walk-off 2-1 nightcap victory.

THE LEAD

Saint Joseph's scored early in both contests, with three runs in the first two innings of the opening game and a run off a Melodie Bailey (Lebanon, Maine) home run – the first of her collegiate career – in the first frame of the second tilt. The nightcap stood at a 1-1 tie going into the bottom of the seventh, when senior Megen Pollini (Wolfeboro, N.H.) opened with a base hit and later scored on a walk-off single from sophomore Kelsy Gaddy (Limington, Maine).

With the victories, the Monks run their win streak to a season-high seven games.

GAME ONE – SAINT JOSEPH'S 5, BOWDOIN 2

SJC HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior catcher Jennifer Murphy (Andover, Mass.), celebrating her birthday, was 3-4 with three singles
  • Bailey went 3-4 with a pair of runs scored
  • Junior third baseman Mariah Harrison (Buxton, Maine) was 2-4 with a run, a double, and two RBI
  • Freshman shortstop Meghan Elliott (Blackstone, Mass.) added two hits and a stolen base in four at bats

BOWDOIN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior Katie Gately (Rehoboth, Mass.) went 2-3
  • Sophomore Ali Miller (St. Paul, Minn.) went 1-3 with an RBI
  • Freshman Caroline Rice (Santa Ana, Calif.) roped a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the seventh

PITCHERS OF RECORD

  • SJC junior Kylie McFadden (Dover, N.H.) scattered five hits over five scoreless frames and picked up the win to improve to 7-3 on the season
  • SJC freshman Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) picked up her third save of the season after allowing two runs off three hits with two K's in two relief innings
  • Bowdoin starter Julia Geaumont (Saco, Maine) falls to 10-5 after giving up five runs (two earned) off 12 hits with five punch-outs over six innings

GAME TWO – SAINT JOSEPH'S 2, BOWDOIN 1

SJC HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pollini went 2-3 with a run and two singles
  • Gaddy was 2-3 with a pair of singles and an RBI
  • Bailey's home run was hit dead center and cleared the outfield wall by at least 30 feet

BOWDOIN HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore catcher Claire McCarthy (Mercer Island, Wash.) went 2-3 with a run and a stolen base
  • Sophomore Lauren O'Shea (West Roxbury, Mass.) was 2-3 with a pair of singles

PITCHERS OF RECORD

  • SJC freshman Kristal Smith (Pittston, Maine) entered the game in the third inning and allowed an unearned run off four hits and a walk with three K's over five frames to improve to 7-4 on the season
  • SJC senior Erica Boulanger (Somersworth, N.H.) started in the circle and tossed two innings while allowing three hits with a pair of K's
  • Bowdoin starter Samantha Roy (Washington, D.C.) yielded a run off four hits with three punch-outs over four innings of work
  • Bowdoin reliever Emily Griffin (Tucson, Ariz.) took the loss after giving up a run off three hits and a free pass with two K's over 2.1 innings

NOTEWORTHY

Senior first baseman Melissa Mayhew (Hiram, Maine) notched the 150th hit of her career when she singled in the fifth inning of the first game.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the wins, Saint Joseph's improves to 15-13 all-time versus Bowdoin College, a team that swept the Monks with 8-0 and 1-0 triumphs in Brunswick last spring. Prior to this evening, St. Joe's had not swept Bowdoin since May 2nd, 1995 when the Royal Blue defeated the Polar Bears by 9-0 and 5-1 scores in Standish.

Saint Joseph's travels to Orono tomorrow to play NCAA DI foe University of Maine in a single seven-inning game starting at 4:00 PM. Bowdoin plays a doubleheader at UMaine-Farmington on Thursday beginning at 4:00 PM.
