Monks Fall to #2 St. John Fisher, Top Emerson College on Opening Day

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (1-1) started the 2017 season with a pair of games the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Sunday. The Monks fell to #2 St. John Fisher (2-0), 8-0, in the opener and defeated former conference foe Emerson College (0-2), 3-1, to pick up their first win of the new campaign.

GAME ONE – ST. JOHN FISHER 8, SAINT JOSEPH'S 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After five scoreless innings, the Cardinals got on the board in the top of the sixth with a run off two hits and put the game away with seven runs off seven hits in the top of the seventh.

ON THE MOUND:

Saint Joseph's senior starter Kylie McFadden (Dover, N.H.) allowed just one run off four hits and five walks with three strikeouts in the first five frames, but was chased after giving up four runs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Kristal Smith (Pittston, Maine) yielded two unearned runs off two hits with a strikeout in 2/3 inning of relief.

St. John Fisher junior starter Lindsey Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) – a two-time NFCA All-America honoree who led the Cardinals to a runner-up finish in the 2016 NCAA DIII Softball Tournament – tossed a two-hitter while allowing three walks with 17 punch-outs.

OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Sophomore shortstop Meghan Elliott (Blackstone, Mass.) and junior designated player Kelsy Gaddy (Limington, Maine) both singled in the loss

OFF THE BAT – ST. JOHN FISHER:

  • Katie Mazierski (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) was 3-3 with two runs and three stolen bases
  • Sophomore Julia Sortisio (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Sophomore Sarah Kubik (Orchard Park, N.Y.) notched two hits apiece

GAME TWO – SAINT JOSEPH'S 3, EMERSON 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks plated a pair of runs in the top of the second, when Smith led off with a double and later scored on a passed ball and freshman right fielder Madisyn Charest (Sidney, Maine) doubled home sophomore Sam Silva (Laconia, N.H.). In the top of the fifth, freshman pinch-hitter Maizee Lee (Saco, Maine) sent senior third baseman Mariah Harrison (Buxton, Maine) home with a groundout to second base to offset the Lions' only run of the afternoon, scored in the bottom of the seventh.

ON THE MOUND:

In her first start of the season, Smith was dominant, allowing a run off three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in a complete-game gem.

Emerson starter Kodie Cash (Big Bear City, Calif.) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) off five hits and four walks with three K's in six innings. Casey Tsamis (Colchester, Conn.) came on in relief and tossed a one-hit seventh inning.

OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Smith helped herself with the bat by going 2-2 with a run, a double, and a stolen base
  • Freshman second baseman Libby Pomerleau (Saco, Maine) went 2-4 with a stolen base

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Today's meeting with St. John Fisher was the first between the two institutions' softball programs…Saint Joseph's is now 7-13 all-time versus Emerson College, the former member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) that joined the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in 2014.

The Monks play a pair of games tomorrow, with an 11:00 AM matchup with #15 WPI and a 3:30 PM tilt against Thiel College.
