Monks Topple Nor'easters, Avenge 2016 Setback

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) tallied two first-half goals, and added a pair of second-half assists, leading Saint Joseph's College in a 5-0 men's soccer victory over the University of New England on Sunday (Sep. 3) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Monks (2-0) controlled play from the start, and finished with sizable cushions in shots (28-3) and corners (14-0) on the way to avenging their only regular-season setback from a year ago (UNE 2-0 on 9/4/16).

Mattos scored one by foot (13th minute) and one with his head (29th minute) to get the visitors started, before Mitchell Duncan (Sanford, Maine) (48th), Noah Robinson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) (61st), and Noah Elmore (Berlin, Vt.) (72nd) contributed goals following halftime. Jesse Ramirez (Dumont, N.J.) supported the attack with a couple of helpers.

St. Joe's starting goalkeeper Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) did not need to make a save in 77 minutes of action to earn the decision, and David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) turned away one shot in the time remaining to preserve the shutout.

Will Shearon (Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England) had five saves in his first collegiate start for UNE (0-2).

Saint Joseph's is off until Saturday when the team travels to Johnson & Wales University for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest starting at 1:00 PM.

NOTABLE:

The Monks notched seven assists in today's win, the most by SJC since dealing a team-record eight helpers in an 11-0 victory over Green Mountain on September 10th, 2015...five goals is tied for the most scored in a game by either team in the history of the series - UNE defeated SJC by the same score on October 1st, 1996.
