Mattos Nets Four Goals in 5-0 Win Over Suffolk

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored a program-record four goals – all in the second half – to help Saint Joseph's College (8-0-1, 4-0-1 GNAC) defeat Suffolk University (4-5-0, 1-4-0 GNAC), 5-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks took a 1-0 lead – off a Mitchell Duncan (Sanford, Maine) goal - into the second set of 45 minutes and Mattos turned on the engine from there. The junior captain doubled the SJC lead off a Jackson Taylor (Gorham, Maine) pass at the 53:01 mark and went on to score three times in a matter of two minutes and 26 seconds (84:53, 86:06, 87:19) to close out the scoring.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) made a pair of saves in the victory while Suffolk netminder Scott Van Cleef registered 14 saves in a losing bid.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held considerable advantages in shots (26-3), shots on goal (19-2), and corner kicks (8-0) in the victory.

OF NOTE:

The goals scored by Mattos in 2:26 is the fourth-fastest time in NCAA DIII Men's Soccer history in which the same player has scored three times. The record is held by Ohio Wesleyan's Mike Pepe, who incredibly netted three tallies in just 69 seconds versus Case Western Reserve on October 10th, 1992. More information on such records can be found here: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_soccer_RB/2017/D3.pdf

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 8-4-1 in the history of the matchup with Suffolk University and has now defeated the Rams in four-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2015 season.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's will play at Regis (Mass.) Wednesday in a GNAC contest slated to start at 4:00 PM.
