Monks Soar Past Blue Jays, 88-29

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (20-1, 12-0 GNAC) routed University of Saint Joseph (CT) (8-12, 3-9 GNAC), 88-29, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Monks have now won 19-consecutive contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

With a 54.3% (19-35) shooting performance – compared to the dismal 8.7% (2-23) effort posted by the Blue Jays - in the opening 20 minutes, the Monks held a 48-12 advantage heading into halftime. Although the starters combined to play just 24 minutes in the third and fourth quarters combined, Saint Joseph's extended the lead to 71-18 through three periods and posted a 17-11 lead in the fourth frame en route to the 59-point victory.

In total, 12 different SJC players scored points – with four of five starters netting double-digits – in what was the Monks' 10th victory by 25 or more points this winter.

KEY STAT:

The Monks shot 55.7% (34-61) overall while the Blue Jays posted a 16.7% (8-48) shooting performance in a blowout loss.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Junior guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) tallied 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals in 21 minutes
  • Junior forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) was 6-8 from the floor with 13 points, three boards, and two assists in just 15 minutes
  • Junior guard Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) chipped in with 12 points with four caroms and three dimes in 19 minutes
  • Junior guard Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals in 20 minutes
  • Freshman guard Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) netted nine points with three boards and a pair of assists in 11 minutes off the bench
  • Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) and Madigan Cogger (York, Maine) came off the bench to score five points apiece

LEADERS – UNIVERSITY OF SAINT JOSEPH:

  • Melicia Mendez paced the Blue Jays with seven points
  • Diamond Wallen pulled down seven rebounds
  • Anna Chevarella tallied six points, two assists, and a pair of steals

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's is now 9-2 in the history of the series with University of Saint Joseph.
