Monks March Past Saints, 16-5

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (10-3, 6-2 GNAC) powered past Emmanuel College (2-9, 2-7 GNAC), 16-5, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's held the lead from beginning to end, although Emmanuel kept things close in the first half and trailed 5-4 after senior Stephanie Warn (Hanson, Mass.) scored her second goal of the night with 5:12 left in the opening frame.

The Monks proceeded to score three unanswered goals, as senior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) and juniors Kara Kelly (York, Maine) and Brittney Arsenault (Westbrook, Maine) all scored to lift the hosts to an 8-4 advantage heading into intermission.

The conference counterparts swapped scores early in the second stanza, as Arsenault and Emmanuel sophomore Allison Hutchings (Billerica, Mass.) hit pay dirt in the opening four minutes to make it a 9-5 game. The Saints would get no closer however, as the Monks rattled off seven-consecutive goals over the following 16 minutes to clinch the 16-5 GNAC victory.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (34-12), ground balls (23-14), and draw controls (19-4) while committing just eight turnovers and clearing successfully on six of eight attempts. Emmanuel coughed the ball up 16 times and went 10-18 on clearing bids.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC sophomore Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) posted three saves in the victory while Emmanuel senior Avery Yang (Lincoln, R.I.) made 12 saves in a losing effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Kara Kelly scored six goals with two assists and four ground balls
  • Caiazzo netted three goals with three ground balls and eight draw controls
  • Arsenault tallied three goals, three ground balls, and four draw controls
  • Junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) scored twice with seven ground balls and six draw controls
  • Sophomore Madison Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) recorded a goal and an assist with three caused turnovers

LEADERS – EMMANUEL:

  • Warn paced the Saints with three goals on four shots
  • Senior Sophia White (Monterey, Calif.) registered four ground balls and two draw controls
  • Hutchings and freshman Aisling Butler (Westfield, Mass.) chipped in with a goal apiece

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 9-2 in the history of the series with Emmanuel College and has now defeated the Saints in five-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2015 season.
