Monks Claw Past AMCATS, 6-2

PAXTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (8-7, 4-3 GNAC) defeated Anna Maria College (4-10, 2-5 GNAC), 6-2, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse contest on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Senior Matt Donnell (Watertown, Mass.) and Isaiah Hickes swapped scores in the first quarter and junior Dan Cunningham (West Islip, N.Y.) netted his seventh goal of the season at the 11:15 mark of the second stanza to lift the Monks to a 2-1 edge heading into intermission.

Cunningham struck again 2:15 into the third quarter and junior Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) made it a 4-1 game when he scored his 44th marker of the year with 11:21 remaining in the penultimate period.

Anna Maria junior James Wieliczko (Holderness, N.H.) potted an unassisted tally 1:46 into the fourth frame to cut the AMCATS' deficit to 4-2, but Finn scored a man-up goal off a Glenn Dion (Pembroke, N.H.) feed with 5:30 left and junior Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.) tacked on his 16th goal of the season at the 3:53 mark to account for the 6-2 final.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) turned away 11 shots while Anna Maria junior Paul Schwarz (Staten Island, N.Y.) registered 24 saves in a losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held a 44-22 lead in shots and a 7-5 advantage in face-off wins while Anna Maria posted a 45-41 edge in ground balls.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Cunningham scored two goals with an assist
  • Finn scored twice with five ground balls
  • Retalic added a goal and an assist with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Dion chipped in with two assists and a game-high six ground balls
  • Senior Liam Skinner (Irving, Texas) picked up five ground balls with four caused turnovers
  • Sophomore Shane Fors (Kalamazoo, Mich.) was 6-11 on face-off attempts with three ground balls

LEADERS – ANNA MARIA:

  • Kyle Benning tallied five ground balls and three caused turnovers
  • Daniel Rinkus registered three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the triumph, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-0 in the history of the series with Anna Maria College.
