King Throws No-Hitter, Monks Sweep AMCATS, 8-0 & 9-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STANDISH, Maine – Junior pitcher Caitlyn King (Old Town, Maine) tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the nightcap to help Saint Joseph's College (10-11, 8-0 GNAC) sweep Anna Maria College (2-11, 0-4 GNAC) at Richard W. Bailey Field on Sunday afternoon. In a pair of mercy-rule shortened games, the Monks toppled the AMCATS, 8-0, in the lid-lifter, and closed out the day with a 9-0 triumph.

Saint Joseph's has now won eight-consecutive games – all versus conference opponents – and is currently in the driver's seat in the GNAC North Division.

SAINT JOSEPH'S 8, ANNA MARIA 0 (5 inn.)

The Monks opened the day by scoring a run off a pair of hits in the bottom of the first, as junior left fielder Madisyn Charest (Sydney, Maine) singled and later scored on a Melodie Bailey (Lebanon, Maine) base hit.

Saint Joseph's plated five runs off four hits and an error in the second, when Charest registered a two-run single and Meghan Elliott (Mendon, Mass.) and Bailey posted RBI base hits.

St. Joe's added a pair of runs on just one hit and another AMCAT error in the bottom of the third, as junior third baseman Kaylee Burns (Saco, Maine) reached via hit by pitch and scored on a fielder's choice and sophomore right fielder Madeline Wood (Madison, Maine) walked and stole home on a first-and-third steal play.

IN THE CIRCLE:

Junior starter Kate Whitney (Jonesboro, Maine) improves to 5-5 on the season after allowing four hits and three walks with five strikeouts over five innings. Freshman Ashley Garcia (Cornwall, N.Y.) took the loss after yielding eight runs (seven earned) off seven hits and four walks with two K's over 3.1 frames.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Charest was 2-3 with two runs and a pair of RBI
  • Bailey went 2-2 with a stolen base and two RBI
  • Freshman center fielder Ashley Emery (Madison, Maine) was 2-2 with a steal and a run scored
  • For Anna Maria, Garcia was the lone repeat-hitter after going 2-3 with a pair of singles

SAINT JOSEPH'S 9, ANNA MARIA 0 (5 inn.)

The Monks kicked off the nightcap by plating two runs off three hits in the bottom of the first, as Charest doubled home Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) and promptly scored when the following batter, Elliott, singled to center field.

St. Joe's doubled the lead with two runs off three knocks in the second when freshman third baseman Emily Jefferds (Scarborough, Maine) tripled to right and scored on a Katie Chadbourne (Jaffrey, N.H.) sac fly and Emery walked and eventually crossed the plate on a Charest fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Joseph's proceeded to take a 9-0 lead with five runs off five hits and an Anna Maria miscue. Charest tripled home a pair and scored on a single by Elliott, who later sprinted home on a passed ball. Bailey reached on an error and scored on a single off the bat of freshman pinch-hitter Camryn LaPierre (Westbrook, Maine) to close out the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE:

King allowed just one baserunner in the no-hitter with one walk and three K's over five innings. Anna Maria senior Victoria Falco (Marlborough, Mass.) falls to 1-6 after giving up nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and three walks in four frames.
