Monks Dominate in 2021 Opener, Topple Fighting Scots 17-6

WENHAM, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) kicked off the 2021 campaign with a convincing 17-6 victory over Gordon College (0-1) in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The season-opener stood at a 2-2 deadlock 7:26 into play, but the Monks scored five of the next six goals during the remainder of the first half to stake a 7-3 lead heading into intermission.

The Monks' offensive surge continued after the break with five unanswered tallies in a matter of 10 minutes, as freshman Megan Mourmouras (Biddeford, Maine) scored consecutive markers to close the run with the visitors owning a 12-3 cushion with 20:49 remaining.

The Fighting Scots responded by scoring the game's next two goals to cut their deficit to 12-5 with 12:32 left, but St. Joe's closed out the contest with a 5-1 run to account for the 17-6 final.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (45-15), shots on goal (29-11), ground balls (23-13), draw controls (15-8), and caused turnovers (10-7) on the afternoon.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Madelyn Nelson (Casco, Maine) turned away five shots in 57:07 minutes of action while senior Amanda Huang (Gray, Maine) was untested in 1:53 minutes of relief duty.

Gordon junior netminder Annabel Christenson (Scituate, Mass.) recorded 12 saves in the losing effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Junior Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) tallied four goals, three assists, five ground balls, and four caused turnovers
  • Senior Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine) scored three goals with an assist and four draw controls
  • Mourmouras potted four goals and picked up four ground balls in her NCAA debut
  • Freshman Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) registered three goals, three ground balls, and three draw controls

LEADERS – GORDON:

  • Senior Katelyn Dyer (Plainfield, N.J.) scored twice and posted a pair of assists
  • Junior Abigail Mansfield (Starksboro, Vt.) contributed two goals and an assist
  • Senior Lena Larson (Fredericksburg, Va.) added two goals, three draw controls, and a pair of ground balls

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Today's matchup was the first-ever between the Monks' and Fighting Scots' women's lacrosse programs.
