Monks Soar Past Blue Jays, 71-52

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (10-1, 4-0 GNAC) defeated University of Saint Joseph (6-4, 2-1 GNAC), 71-52, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball action on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) put forth a tremendous effort and nearly posted a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists along with six steals in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks held the lead for the duration of play, but the Blue Jays remained within striking distance until midway through the second quarter. Clinging to a 19-16 lead with 8:11 before the break, the hosts kicked off a 17-4 run on the way to holding a 36-22 cushion going into intermission.

USJ managed to cut the SJC lead down to seven points (43-36) with 5:31 left in the third period, but Saint Joseph's essentially put the game out of reach with a 12-2 run to close out the penultimate quarter with a 55-38 advantage.

The Monks went on to hold a game-high 20-point (66-46) lead when junior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) hit a jump shot with 3:59 left in the fourth frame.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks held a 35-4 lead in points off turnovers…The Blue Jays committed 30 turnovers while the Monks had 13 miscues in the conference contest…USJ was 0-5 from three-point distance, the first time the Blue Jays failed to make a three-pointer since falling to Elms College, 67-54, on December 8th, 2018.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Hurley posted her fourth double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds and added eight assists and six steals in the triumph
  • Senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) led the Monks with 16 points
  • Howe tallied 15 points off a 7-for-13 shooting effort with five rebounds and three assists
  • Senior guard Grace Philippon (Glenburn, Maine) added nine points, seven rebounds, four steals, and two assists
  • Sophomore guard Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) came off the bench to score eight points
  • Sophomore guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) chipped in with four points, four assists, and three steals in 16 minutes

LEADERS – UNIVERSITY OF SAINT JOSEPH:

  • Sophomore Jordan Ouellette (Bristol, Conn.) led all players with 20 points and pulled down five rebounds
  • Senior Cheyenne-Mone Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) added 10 points with eight rebounds
  • Senior Deanna De La Cruz (Winsted, Conn.) came off the bench to score eight points and grab five boards

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the result, Saint Joseph's improves to 12-2 all-time versus University of Saint Joseph and has now defeated the Blue Jays in six-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2014-15 season.
