Monks Post Pair of Mercy Rule Wins Over Cadets, 10-0 & 9-1

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (11-11, 7-1 GNAC) won both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) softball doubleheader versus Norwich University (8-12, 1-7 GNAC) at Richard W. Bailey Field on Friday. The Monks mercy-ruled the Cadets in both contests with 10-0 and 9-1 wins.

GAME ONE:

St. Joe's took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second thanks to a home run by freshman Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, Mass.), her first career homer as a Monk. Bailey Rassol (Rehoboth, Mass.) continued the attack in the third with a double bringing Ashley Emery (Madison, Maine) and Emily Jefferds (Scarborough, Maine) in to score. Emery and Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) notched two RBI doubles, Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine) doubled to send Rassol home, and Lydia Goodnough singled for an RBI. 

The Cadets were unable to get runs on the board after tallying four hits in the game.

IN THE CIRCLE:

  • SJC junior starter Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) improved to 5-4 on the season after shutting down the Cadets with just four hits allowed and two strikeouts in five innings
  • Cadet starter Annika Beebe is now 3-3 after giving up 10 runs on 10 hits in 4 innings

OFF THE BAT:

  • Connery went 2-for-2 with a homer and single
  • Rassol was 2-for-3 with a two-RBI double and a single
  • Senior Ashley Emery (Madison. Maine) was 2-for-1 with a two RBI double
  • Junior Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) doubled and went 2-for-4 with a run
  • For the Cadets, Julia Vawter went 2-for-2 with two singles

GAME TWO:

The Monks started strong in the closing contest with an RBI single from Howe in the bottom of the first. The Cadets equalized in the second inning after Hailey Brickey reached on a fielder's choice that brought Beebe in to score.

The St. Joe's offense quickly regained its momentum scoring twice in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1. Junior pitcher Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) commanded the rest of the game allowing no runs through three innings. Sophomores Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) and Alexis Downs (Auburn, Maine) each batted in an RBI in the third to extend the lead.

Goodnough roped a two-run double in the fourth and the Monks added two additional unearned runs to close out the scoring ledger with nine runs on nine hits.

IN THE CIRCLE:

  • SJC junior starter Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) improved to 4-2 on the season after allowing three hits and striking out eight batters
  • Cadet starter Kennedy White fell to 2-4 after giving up five runs on six hits and a walk in two innings; Julia Vawter allowed four runs off three hits in relief

OFF THE BAT:

  • Goodnough was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs
  • Howe was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI
  • Emery was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI
  • Downs was 1-for-2 with an RBI

Saint Joseph's will host Emmanuel College on Saturday in a conference doubleheader set to start at 11:00 AM.
