Monks Topple Blazers in GNAC Opener, 20-4

STANDISH, Maine – Top-seeded Saint Joseph's College (18-0) cruised past #8 Elms College (7-8), 20-4, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse tournament quarterfinal at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's advances to the semifinal round of the GNAC Tournament and will host the winner of the #5 Emmanuel / #4 Norwich quarterfinal, which is being played tonight, in a semifinal contest on Tuesday, start time TBD.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks were in complete control throughout the tourney tilt and held a 16-0 lead before the Blazers scored their first goal of the game at the 11:35 mark of the third quarter.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (36-11), shots on goal (30-8), ground balls (35-19) and draw controls (14-13) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

The Monks played four goalies in today's win as freshman starter Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) did not face a shot in the first half, first-year Jenna Shutt (Holliston, Mass.) posted a pair of saves in the third quarter, and freshman Mackenzie Baston (Gray, Maine) turned away two shots in the fourth frame.

Elms senior goalie Emma Walsh (Dracut, Mass.) made 10 saves in the losing effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Grad student Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) tallied three goals, four assists, five ground balls and two draw controls
  • Sophomore Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) netted five goals with an assist and five ground balls
  • Freshman Shauna Clark (Oakland, Maine) scored three goals with three assists and a pair of ground balls
  • Sophomore Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) added four goals, nine draw controls, and three ground balls
  • Sophomore Megan Mourmouras (Biddeford, Maine) contributed three goals on three shots
  • Second-year Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and two assists

LEADERS – ELMS:

  • Junior Taylor Borla (Southington, Conn.) scored a goal with an assist and eight draw controls
  • Sophomore Elise Paier (West Springfield, Mass.) netted a goal and dealt an assist
  • Junior Anna-Elise Pikul (Belchertown, Mass.) potted a goal with six ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers
