St. Joe's Handles Dean, Dexter Breaks Season Scoring Record

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (11-0, 7-0 GNAC) cruised past Dean College (3-8, 3-6 GNAC), 19-6, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the SJC Athletics Complex.

BROKEN RECORD:

With a goal at the 10:24 mark of the second quarter, grad student Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) broke the Monks' single-season scoring record. Dexter, who finished the game with two goals and eight assists, has tallied 92 points in just 11 games this spring. The former record of 89 points was set by Elyse Caiazzo '18, who established the mark while playing in 19 games during the 2015 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks dominated the stat sheet and held a 16-0 lead before the Bulldogs scored their first goal of the game with 1:38 left in the second quarter. Dean managed to score five of the game's final seven goals in the third and fourth quarters combined to account for the 19-6 final.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC freshman starter Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) made one save in the first half while first-year Mackenzie Baston (Gray, Maine) turned away four shots in the second stanza.

Dean senior netminder Jordyn McKenney (Nashua, N.H.) posted six saves in the losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (29-15), shots on goal (25-11), ground balls (35-19), draw controls (18-10), and caused turnovers (9-7) on the afternoon.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Dexter paced the Monks with 10 points (2G – 8A) and picked up four ground balls
  • Sophomore Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) scored four goals with an assist, six draw controls, and two ground balls
  • Sophomore Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) tallied three goals, two assists, and two ground balls
  • First-year Shauna Clark (Oakland, Maine) produced two goals and an assist with three ground balls and two draw controls
  • Sophomore Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) scored twice with an assist, six draw controls, and two ground balls
  • Freshman Brianna Paul (Brattleboro, Vt.) netted a pair of goals

LEADERS – DEAN:

  • Freshmen Natalie Peterson (Hudson, Mass.) and Nina Medeiros (Fairhaven, Mass.) scored two goals apiece
  • Junior Jazzy Sztyler-Magee (Burlington, Conn.) scored a goal with four ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Today's contest was the first-ever between the Saint Joseph's and Dean College women's lacrosse programs. The Bulldogs joined the GNAC at the start of the 2020-21 academic year.
