Monks Unable to Tame Lions, Fall 22-9

BOSTON, Mass. – Emerson College (2-1) topped Saint Joseph's College (0-2), 22-9, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Emerson found the board first with a Jack Burns goal at the 12:35 mark of the first quarter, but Saint Joseph's freshman David Cook (Upton, Mass.) tied the game with his first NCAA tally three minutes later.

The stalemate did not last long however, as Burns scored off the ensuing face-off and lifted his team to a 3-1 advantage with his third of seven total goals on the afternoon scored off a Birk Swan feed with 6:52 left in the opening frame.

The Lions scored twice in the following three minutes before SJC senior Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) scored a man-up marker off a Noah Tierney-Honan (Dracut, Mass.) dish to make it a 5-2 game.

Saint Joseph's was unable to close the gap as the hosts outscored the visitors by a 6-2 margin in the second stanza and carried a 12-4 cushion into intermission.

Emerson put the game well out of reach by starting the third quarter on a 4-0 run, which resulted in a 16-4 lead with 10:21 remaining in the penultimate period.

Freshman Tiger Hopkins (Leeds, Maine) scored two of the Monks' final five goals in the setback.

TEAM STATS:

Emerson held the advantage in shots (41-33), shots on goal (28-22), ground balls (41-28), and face-off wins (25-8) on the afternoon.

THE KEEPERS:

Sophomore starter Liam Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) took the loss after allowing 16 goals with five saves in 45 minutes while sophomore Scott Walsh (Brookline, N.H.) yielded six goals and posted one stop in the fourth quarter.

The Lions featured four different netminders in the victory, as Malcom McGrath picked up the win after making six saves and giving up four goals in 34:39 between the pipes and Connor Nydegger, Elijah Turbow, and Ethan Corby combined to allow five goals while logging 25:21 minutes of mop-up duty.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Michaud and Hopkins netted two goals apiece
  • Junior Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) scored twice and was credited with an assist
  • Tierney-Honan dealt a pair of assists with two ground balls
  • Sophomore Ryan Bogdanski (Southington, Conn.) notched four ground balls
  • Senior Eli Arsenault (Saco, Maine) and junior Connor Bogdanski (Southington, Conn.) contributed two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers apiece
  • Junior Devin Rheaume (Londonderry, N.H.) registered two caused turnovers

LEADERS – EMERSON:

  • Burns paced the offense with seven goals on 10 shots  and picked up three ground balls
  • Aedan Kiniry added four tallies and two ground balls
  • Kurt Schwarz netted three goals with an assist
  • James Toomy was 15-for-19 on face-off attempts with 10 ground balls

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the setback Saint Joseph's falls to 5-3 in the history of the series with Emerson College.
