Monks Split Opening Day Games in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (1-1) defeated Catholic University (1-2), 3-0, and fell to Dominican (Ill.) (5-0), 5-0, in THE Spring Games action at the Fortune Athletics Complex on Sunday.

SAINT JOSEPH'S 3, CATHOLIC 0:

SJC senior starting pitcher Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) and Catholic opener Katie Hurd locked heads for five scoreless innings before the Monks broke through with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) led off the frame with a double, freshman Hannah Gosselin (Biddeford, Maine) singled, and senior Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) walked to load the bases for sophomore third baseman Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine), who sent all three runners home with a double  off the center field wall.

Pence put forth a tremendous effort in the season-opener, as the senior southpaw scatted three hits and four walks with four strikeouts over seven shutout innings. Hurd took the loss for Catholic after giving up three runs on six hits and a pair of walks with three K's in 5.1 innings.

Foley, who was 2-3 with a double and three RBI, was the lone repeat-hitter for either team.

DOMINICAN (ILL.) 5, SAINT JOSEPH'S 0:

Dominican starting pitcher Emma Woodhouse kept the Monks off balance all game, as the sophomore fanned eight batters while allowing four hits and one walk in a complete-game shutout performance.

After two scoreless innings, the Stars sent a run home off four hits in the bottom of the third and tacked on two more runs off three hits in the fourth. Dominican tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to account for the 5-0 final.

For Dominican, Kennedy Marvin, Makayla Barnes, Delaney McRiley, Theresa Wilsterman, and Woodhouse all notched a pair of hits in the victory.

For Saint Joseph's, Howe and sophomore shortstop Rylee Page (Somersworth, N.H.) both went 1-2 in the loss. Senior starting pitcher Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in four innings. Senior Sydney Hatch (Newburgh, Maine) gave up a run off three hits with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.

Saint Joseph's is back in action tomorrow with a pair of games versus Illinois College. First pitch at Fortune Road Athletic Complex is slated for 2:00 PM.
