Monks Drop Pair on Day Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (1-3) suffered a pair of losses in THE Spring Games softball action on Monday. The Monks fell victim to a walk-off two-run home run in a 7-6 setback at the hands of Wesleyan College and capped day two of their spring break trip with a 10-2 loss to Springfield College.

WESLEYAN 7, SAINT JOSEPH'S 6:

The Monks held a 3-0 lead after Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, Maine) doubled home a run in the third and Mollie Verreault (Scarborough, Maine) registered an RBI on a fielder's choice and later scored on a Hannah Gosselin (Biddeford, Maine) in the top of the fourth.

The Cardinals proceeded to plate five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth as Lizzie Marino broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run single to lift her team to a 5-3 lead.

St. Joe's reclaimed the lead with two runs off four hits and a Wesleyan error in the top of the fifth, when junior Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, Mass.) belted a two-run double, and Gosselin delivered an RBI single to give the Royal Blue a 6-5 edge. The Cardinals forced the Monks to strand three runners in the fifth, and that proved costly for what came later.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cat Palmer led off and reached on an error to set the stage for Bella Secaira-Cotto, who belted a game-winning two-run home run.

The Monks rapped 14 hits but stranded 11 baserunners in the sudden setback, as Gosselin, Connery, Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine), Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine), Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, Maine), and Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) notched two hits apiece.

Goodnough was dealing through three innings in the circle but ran into trouble in the fourth when she yielded five runs. Pelletier took the loss in relief after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with two K's in 2.2 innings of relief.

SPRINGFIELD 10, SAINT JOSEPH'S 2:

Springfield claimed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second and the St. Joe's responded with two runs on a Bouchard double in the bottom of the third.

As it played out, the Monks were unable to score for the remainder of the game while the Pride offense exploded for seven additional runs, including five in the sixth inning.

After working in relief in the opener, Pelletier took the circle to start the second game and suffered the loss after allowing five runs on six hits. Connery gave up four runs on two hits and three walks in 1.1 innings and sophomore Miranda Northrup (Whitefield, Maine) yielded a run on two hits with a strikeout in 0.2 innings of work.
