Monks Win Middlebury Invitational, Topple Middlebury 93-82

MIDDLEBURY, VT. - The Saint Joseph's College Monks (8-4, 0-1) defeated the Middlebury Panthers (7-4) 93-82, in the championship round of the Middlebury College Invitational men's basketball tournament on Saturday evening. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first half consisted of much back and forth play with the lead changing 15 times in the first half. The Monks secured the largest lead of the game in the first half on a Julian Llopiz (Boston, MA) jumper, bringing the lead to 10 (43-33) with 2:53 on the clock. The Panthers continued to chip away reducing the Monks lead to four, sending the Monks into the second half with a 44-40 lead. 

The Monks used the four point lead to their advantage, quickly increasing it to 10 by the 14:21 mark. With 4:44 on the clock, the Monks expanded their lead to 16 points (75-59). The Monks held on to secure a 93-82 victory.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks scored 10 points to Middlebury's nine off of turnovers and were 17-6 on second chance points. Middlebury out scored SJC in the paint 36-32 and had more fast break points. 

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
  • Remijo Wani (Portland, ME) led the Monks with a game high of 26 points, team high of eight rebounds, and four steals
  • John Paul Frazier (York, ME) contributed 20 points, two assists, and one rebound
  • Wani Donato (Portland, ME) tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, one steal, and two assists
  • Julian Llopiz recorded 16 points with four rebounds and two assists
  • Silvano Ismail (Portland, ME) added 8 points, six rebounds, one steal, and six assists

LEADERS – MIDDLEBURY:
  • Tristan Joseph led Middlebury with 20 points and four rebounds
  • Evan Flaks notched 17 points, three rebounds, two steals, and five assists
  • Sam Stevens recorded ten points, one steal, and two rebounds

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Today's game marks the 1st contest between the Monks and the Panthers.
