Monks Tip Blue Jays on Senior Day, 3-2

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (9-6, 8-1 GNAC) rallied in the second half to defeat the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (9-7, 5-4 GNAC), 3–2, in a hard-fought Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey matchup at the SJC Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

SENIOR MOMENT:

Before the contest the Monks held a brief ceremony to honor the Monks' five seniors: Emilia Galimberti (Wolfeboro, N.H.), Kienna Haley (Scarborough, Maine), Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine), Chloe Grosso (Westbrook, Maine), and Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.). The field hockey Class of 2026 has helped the Monks post a 37-38 (.493) overall record with a 29-15 (.659) mark in GNAC play and three GNAC Tournament appearances during their time on the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a scoreless opening quarter, the visitors struck first at the 20:26 mark when senior Ariana Komonaj (Thomaston, Conn.) converted a penalty stroke to give USJ a 1–0 halftime lead. The Monks responded quickly after the break, with senior standout Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) tying the game just over ten minutes into the third quarter when she finished a feed from Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) off a penalty corner to even the score at 1–1. Ten minutes later, Waryas found the back of the cage again, netting her 18th goal of the season on an assist from Zoey Lailer (Limington, Maine) to push Saint Joseph's ahead, 2–1.

USJ drew even again in the fourth quarter when Komonaj notched her second goal of the day off an Aurelia Barker (Thomaston, Conn.) assist at the 55:16 mark. The Monks answered swiftly, capitalizing on a long through ball from Galimberti down the left side in the offensive end. Freshman Myia SeeHusen (Corinna, Maine) collected the pass and buried the decisive goal just over two minutes later, lifting Saint Joseph's to a 3–2 victory.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (17-7), shots on goal (12-5), and penalty corners (19-3) in the conference victory.

THE KEEPERS:

In goal, Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) earned the win for Saint Joseph's with three saves. Junior Jaci Felix-Hull (East Lyme, Conn.) kept the visitors within reach, making eight stops in a losing effort.
