STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (5-8-0, 5-4-0 GNAC) dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Regis College (6-8-1, 6-3-0 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
2000 MAC CHAMPIONS HONORED:
Before kickoff, Saint Joseph's men's soccer honored the 2000 squad that captured the program's first-ever conference title, the Maine Athletic Conference Championship. Twelve members of the historic team, including former Head Coach Bob Bourget, were in attendance and recognized in a special ceremony. Each received a Monks quarter-zip pullover embroidered with the SJC logo and "2000 MAC Champions" as a lasting memento of the milestone season. (Group photo below).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a scoreless opening half, the Pride broke through in the 73rd minute when senior Callum Park (Providenciales, Turks & Caicos) converted the lone goal of the contest. Despite generating a flurry of chances down the stretch, including an 88th-minute shot from junior Cole Bishop (Gorham, Maine) that was punched over the crossbar by Regis keeper Chris Alcon (Cartagena, Spain), the Monks were unable to produce the equalizer.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (11-9), shots on goal (8-4), and corner kicks (6-2) in a losing effort.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC senior Logan Davis (Naples, Maine) turned away three shots in the setback while Alcon notched seven saves in a clean sheet performance.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Today's win marked a milestone for Regis, as the Pride earned their first-ever victory over Saint Joseph's after dropping the previous nine meetings in the series.
