Metcalf Hat Trick Powers Monks Past Chargers, 6-2

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (6-8-0, 6-4-0 GNAC) exploded for four first-half goals and rolled to a 6–2 triumph over Colby-Sawyer College (4-9-3, 3-5-2 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action on a brisk Tuesday evening at the SJC Athletics Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks wasted little time seizing control. Just four minutes in, sophomore Nick Marion (Windham, Maine) buried a perfect service across the box from freshman Mattheus Silva (Acton, Mass.) to open the scoring. Only two minutes later, sophomore Curtis Metcalf (South Portland, Maine) capitalized on a defensive miscue, stealing a loose ball from the keeper and finishing into an empty net.

Saint Joseph's pushed the lead to three when junior Cole Bishop (Gorham, Maine) outdueled the goalie for a bouncing ball and tapped home the chance in the 16th minute. Metcalf struck again five minutes later, slotting in his second goal of the half off a feed from Hayes Sweeney (Hollis, Maine) to make it 4-0.

Colby-Sawyer broke through in the 31st minute as senior Nick Carrabino (Fair Haven, Vt.) headed in a corner from sophomore Colin Riley-Perec (Plymouth, Mass.), trimming the deficit to 4-1 at the half.

In the second stanza, junior Zander Haskell (Scarborough, Maine) netted his fourth of the year in the 72nd minute before Metcalf completed his hat trick ten minutes later to make it 6-1. The Chargers tallied once more in the 89th minute courtesy of Andres Cuellar-Vera (Bonita Springs, Fla.), but the outcome was already well in hand.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's owned the edge in shots (20-12) and shots on goal (16-9), while Colby-Sawyer held a slight 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

THE KEEPERS:

The Monks split the duties in net: senior Logan Davis (Naples, Maine) collected four saves while conceding one first-half goal, and freshman Ziggy Babbott (Hinesburg, Vt.) added three saves with one goal allowed in the second half. For Colby-Sawyer, senior Yener Bartolon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was under siege throughout, finishing with nine saves against six goals.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 9-1-1 all-time versus Colby-Sawyer and avenges a 2-0 setback to the Chargers in New London last fall.

NEXT!

The Monks will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday when they host Dean College in a GNAC matchup set to begin at 1:00 PM.
