WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (8-6-1, 7-4-1 GNAC) earned a 2-0 victory over the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (5-10-1, 5-6-1 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer play on Saturday at USJ Soccer Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks struck first in the 15th minute when sophomore Emilienne Bidding-Augustine (New Gloucester, Maine) buried her first goal of the season off a feed from senior Sydney Gallop (Hermon, Maine).
Saint Joseph's doubled its advantage early in the second half, as Gallop finished her team-leading ninth tally of the season in the 54th minute on an assist from sophomore Maeve Davis (Scarborough, Maine).
USJ pushed forward late, generating eight second-half shots and six corner kicks, but the Blue Jays could not solve the Monks' back line or sophomore goalkeeper Ashlyn Guerette (Merrimack, N.H.). USJ forward Alana Picard recorded the hosts' best chance to score, as she hit the post twice in a matter of six seconds in the 85th minute.
TEAM STATS:
USJ held the lead in shots (13-8) and corner kicks (6-3) while both teams posted five shots on goal during the GNAC matchup.
THE KEEPERS:
Guerette recorded five saves en route to her sixth shutout of the season. USJ keeper Madison Corcoran made three stops in the setback.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 10-5-6 all-time versus University of Saint Joseph.
