BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England (2–3) pulled away with a dominant third quarter and handed Saint Joseph's College (1–2) a 73–50 loss in non-conference women's basketball action Wednesday evening at the Harold Alfond Forum.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's fell behind early as UNE opened the game on a 12–0 run and carried a 19–12 lead after the first quarter. The Monks tightened defensively in the second, holding the Nor'easters to just four made field goals and trimming the deficit to 29–23 at the break.
UNE took control in the third quarter, shooting 55.6% (10-18), forcing 10 SJC turnovers, and hitting three three-pointers during a decisive 26–12 stretch that extended the margin to 55–35. The Nor'easters maintained control throughout the fourth and pushed the lead to as many as 26.
STATS OF THE GAME:
Neither team shot particularly well, but UNE held the advantage at 34.2% (25-73) compared to Saint Joseph's 26.3% (15-57). The Nor'easters owned a 56–36 rebounding margin, which led to 19 second-chance points and a 32–20 edge in the paint. UNE also converted 17 SJC turnovers into 25 points in the victory.
