BOSTON, MA. - The Saint Joseph's College Monks (18-4, 10-1) defeated the Emmanuel Saints (4-18 ,3-8) 92-80 in a GNAC men's basketball contest on Wednesday evening on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Saint Joseph's College Monks opened the game on a John Paul Frazier jumper, marking Frazier's 1000th career point. The Saints and Monks would battle during the first half with much back and forth. From the 14:09 mark to 4:55 the Mons held onto the lead, gaining an advantage of as many as six points five times. During the first half the Monks and Saints both tied up the game four times and gained the lead three times each. The Saints outscored the Monks 5-3 on 2nd chance points, while the Monks outscored the Saints 26-14 in the paint. Despite their efforts, the Monks exited the first half down by one point, 48-49.
The Monks wasted no time and quickly took control of the game with an 18-2 run in the first 5:30 of the second half during Wednesday's conference matchup. Wani Donato and Remijo Wani played key roles in the run, contributing 15 of the 18 points for Saint Joseph's to open the second period. Wani and Donato exchanged baskets in the early part of the run, with the Monks pulling ahead by three. After a three-pointer from John Paul Frazier and a layup by Donato, Wani added five straight points, hitting two free throws and a three-pointer, stretching the lead to 62-49.
The 18-2 run ended with four more points from Donato, including a fast-break layup that gave Saint Joseph's their largest lead of the night at 66-51. Emmanuel attempted to respond, launching an 11-3 run over 2:40 to trim the deficit to seven. However, Saint Joseph's answered with an 11-3 run of their own to secure the double-digit victory, 92-80.
