Monks Overpower Mitchell Mariners in 98-74 Victory

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Saint Joseph's College Monks (19-4, 11-1) defeated the Mitchell Mariners (14-8, 6-5) 98-74 in a GNAC men's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Mitchell Mariners opened the game on a three-pointer but the Monks were quick to respond with a jumper from Silvano Ismail. The Monks and Mariners battled in the first half with the Mariners trailing narrowly until the 10:22 mark when the Monks began to pull away on a 12-0 scoring run. SJC increased their lead by as many as 24 points before closing out the half with a 21 point lead, 50-29.

The Mariners came back to the court for the second half with a renewed effort to cut the deficit, scoring 45 points to the Monks 48 for the half, but it wouldn't be enough for a comeback. The Monks held on and pushed forward for the 98-74 win. 

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Remijo Wani (Portland, ME) recorded 21 points, nine rebounds, and four steals
  • Silvano Ismail (Portland, ME) added 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal
  • Julian Llopiz (Boston, MA) scored 14 points, four rebounds, one steal, and two assists
  • John Paul Frazier (York, ME) notched 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals

LEADERS –MITCHELL:

  • Jaylan Clardy recorded a game-high of 25 points, six rebounds, and an assist
  • Robert Zrilis added 10 points, three rebounds, and a steal
  • Walker Baillargeon contributed nine points and two rebounds

The Monks are back in action at home on Tuesday against Norwich.
