SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In a tightly contested matchup at Archie Allen Field on Wednesday afternoon, the Springfield College Pride (4-12, 0-1) edged out the Saint Joseph's College (8-6, 1-1) Monks 5-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Springfield struck first in the opening inning when M. Lepere came home on a bases-loaded walk issued to C. Balchius. The Monks answered in the third, plating two runs to take their first lead of the day. Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, MA) sparked the offense with an RBI triple to deep right, scoring Luke Doughty (York, ME), before coming home himself on a fielder's choice to put Saint Joseph's ahead 2-1.
The lead was short-lived, as Springfield responded in the bottom half of the inning. J. Dunaisky delivered the game's biggest hit, a three-run triple that swung the momentum back in favor of the Pride, giving them a 4-2 advantage. Springfield added another run in the fourth, capitalizing on a fielding error in center to extend the lead to 5-2.
Saint Joseph's continued to battle, cutting into the deficit in the sixth when N. Villano laced an RBI double to bring home Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH). However, Springfield's bullpen held firm down the stretch, keeping the Monks off the board the rest of the way to secure the win.
