STANDISH, ME-The Saint Joseph's College of Maine baseball team came up short Wednesday afternoon, falling 16-8 to visiting Thomas College.
Saint Joseph's got off to a strong start in the first inning, taking a 3-2 lead thanks to an RBI double from Ethan Belvin (Claremont, NH) and a two-run single by Dylan Brander (Merrimack, NH). But Thomas quickly answered with a six-run outburst in the second inning, capped off by a grand slam to left.
Thomas didn't let up, tacking on three more runs in the fourth and another pair in the fifth to stretch their lead to 13-3. The Monks fought back late, scoring twice in the sixth and three more in the seventh—highlighted by a two-RBI single from Brady Cabral (Fall River, MA)—but it wasn't enough to close the gap.
Cam Haynes led the charge for the Terriers, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and seven RBIs. On the Saint Joseph's side, Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME) and Cabral were among several players who chipped in offensively.
On the mound, Nate Leavitt (Alton, NH) took the loss for the Monks, giving up six runs (five earned) in just one inning.
The loss drops the Monks to 12-13, while Thomas moves to 7-15.The Monks are back in action against Rivier on Thursday.
