HAMDEN, CT-The Saint Joseph's Monks rallied from an early deficit to take down Albertus Magnus, 12-6, fueled by a power surge and a game-changing eight-run fourth inning.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Monks evened the score in the second when Nick Villano (Peabody, MA) came home on a wild pitch, and Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, MA) followed with an RBI single. The Falcons responded in the third, regaining the lead on a three-run blast.
Momentum swung dramatically in the fourth, as the Monks sent 13 batters to the plate and erupted for eight runs on just three hits. Ryan Kastle (Concord, NH) delivered the biggest blow, crushing a grand slam to left. Saint Joseph's took full advantage of control issues from three different Albertus Magnus pitchers, drawing six walks in the inning.
On the mound, William Dionne (Somerset, MA) picked up his second win of the season, working five innings and allowing five runs. Jason Johnson (Thomaston, CT) shut the door with four solid innings of relief, giving up just one run while striking out four.
For the Falcons, Shawn Smith led the way offensively, going 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs. Pitcher Aaron McIntyre took the loss after failing to record an out in the fourth, surrendering five runs.
Michael Wearne (Ellington, CT) put the finishing touch on the Monks' offensive outburst with a solo homer in the eighth. Saint Joseph's finished with 10 hits and 11 walks in the win.
