Monks Battle but Fall to Bowdoin, 14-6

STANDISH, Maine — Saint Joseph's College (20-17) came up short in a 14-6 non-conference setback to Bowdoin College (22-9) at Larry Mahaney Diamond.

The Polar Bears came out swinging, pushing across three quick runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Despite the tough start, the Monks regrouped and kept battling throughout the night.

Trailing 6-0 after three innings, Saint Joseph's sparked a rally in the bottom of the third. After a pair of hit batters set the stage, the Monks cashed in with three runs as Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, CT), Ryan Kastle (Concord, NH), and Mike Richards crossed the plate. Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, MA), Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH), and Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME) each delivered key RBI hits to close the gap and keep the Monks within striking distance.

Bowdoin answered with two runs in the fourth and continued to apply pressure, but Saint Joseph's kept fighting. Jack Moltenbrey (East Longmeadow, MA) and Nick Brindle (Pittsfield, MA) contributed runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and the Monks consistently found ways to create offense, drawing five walks and getting hit by four pitches to keep the bases busy.

Connor Finn (Kingston, MA) provided a highlight with a 1-for-2 night and an RBI, while Carlisle went 1-for-3 with an RBI before exiting the game. Terry Morrissey (Andover, MA) added a hit coming off the bench, and the Monks turned two sharp double plays on defense.

Though Bowdoin's balanced lineup and timely hitting proved too much to overcome, Saint Joseph's continued to show resilience over all nine innings. Eight different Monks pitchers saw action, with Ethan Smith (Hudson Oakes, TX) taking the loss.
