Standish, ME - Saint Joseph's College (10-11, 3-6) went 1-1 in Sunday's Doubleheader versus Norwich (8-11, 3-4), winning 8-0 in the opener and losing 10-5 in the second game at Larry Mahaney Diamond in Standish, Maine.
Game 1: Saint Joseph's 8, Norwich 0
It was a pitching duel early with both pitchers coming out strong. After five innings the score remained 0-0 with a combined four hits from both teams.
The Monks came out swinging in the sixth, scoring seven runs. Nick Villano (Peabody, MA) delivered a double with the bases loaded bringing home two runs to make it 4-0. Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, CT) followed that hit with a double of his own bringing in two more runs. The Monks cruised to victory from there bringing in another run in the eighth to end the game 8-0.
Dylan Brander (Merrimack, NH) pitched eight scoreless innings in just 76 pitches for the Monks, securing the victory. Brander only allowed three hits in his eight innings. Josh Weiners (Duxbury, MA) pitched a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout.
Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH) led the Monks with three hits including a RBI. Villano and Wilhelm both added two hits and two RBI's.
Game 2: Norwich 10, Saint Joseph's 5
The Cadets scored in the 1st inning before the Monks answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Jared Wilhelm tied the game with a solo homer before Jake Carlisle recorded a RBI double to give the Monks the early lead.
Saint Joseph's took the lead back after the game was tied up with a solo homer from Carlisle. The Cadets regained the lead before a two run homer from Wilhelm restored the Monks lead. After that Norwich took control of the game with a grand slam from Michael Sabasteanski in the eighth which made the game 9-5. Norwich added another run in the ninth to make the game 10-5.
Talbot (1-3) picked up the victory, while Jason Johnson (Thomaston, CT) (1-2) took the loss. Wilhelm led the Monks with two hits and three RBI's while Sabasteanski and Jakob Hayes led the Cadets with three hits each recording four and two RBI's respectively.
