Monks Battle in Doubleheader Against Rivier

STANDISH, ME-The Saint Joseph's College Monks (6-12, 2-2) fell to the Rivier Raiders Sunday afternoon 6-4 and 14-6 Rivier at Richard W. Bailey Field.

Game 1: Saint Joseph's 4, Rivier  6

Rivier jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the opening frame, but the Monks didn't back down. Catcher Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, ME) got things going with a double down the left field line in the second inning and came around to score on a Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, MA) RBI single.

Saint Joseph's continued to chip away, cutting into the lead again in the fourth when Charlotte Cloutier (Lewiston, ME) drove in Clara Christiansen (Franklin, ME) with a single to right. The Monks made things interesting in the seventh—Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME) doubled, Makayla Quintal (Gorham, ME) followed with an RBI double, and Bouchard reached on an error that scored Quintal to shrink the gap and make it 6-4. That would be as close as they'd get, though, as the comeback fell just short.

On defense, the Monks turned a slick double play in the second, with Cloutier snagging a line drive and doubling off a Rivier runner at first. The pitching staff held Rivier to 11 hits and gave the team a chance to stay in it throughout.

Game 2: Saint Joseph's 6, Rivier 14

In the second game, the Monks' offense came alive. Bouchard delivered the big blow in the third inning, crushing a three-run homer over to give Saint Joseph's a 3-2 lead. Tirrell stayed hot at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Quintal and Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, ME) each added RBI hits.

The Monks showed patience at the plate as well, drawing four walks—including bases-loaded free passes to Foley and Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) in the fourth that brought in a pair of runs.

Freshman Breann MacMillian (Medway, MA) added a pinch-hit single in the seventh, and Addison French (Rochester, NH) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly to bring home Katoe Bent (Andover, NH), who had worked a walk to start the inning.

The Monks are back in action for another double header at home on Monday against Salem State.
