PROVIDENCE, RI — The Saint Joseph's College baseball team saw its season come to an end on Saturday, dropping a 10-9 nail-biter to Colby-Sawyer in the second game of GNAC Pod Play at the GNAC Tournament.
The Monks battled at the SMAC Athletic Complex, erasing an early six-run hole before ultimately coming up just short in the late innings.
Colby-Sawyer jumped ahead in the third inning, plating six runs capped by a grand slam to take a 6-1 lead. Saint Joseph's wasted no time responding. Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH) launched a two-run homer as part of a three-run bottom half to get the Monks right back in it.
Momentum stayed on the Monks' side in the fourth, as Ryan Kastle (Concord, NH) doubled down the left field line and came around to score on Matt Elwell's (Wakefield, MA) pinch-hit RBI single to even the score at 6-6.
Four errors led to several unearned runs, including a key pair in the seventh that pushed Colby-Sawyer ahead 10-7. Saint Joseph's trimmed the deficit to one in the eighth thanks to an RBI single by Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, CT), but couldn't complete the comeback in the ninth.
Nick Villano (Peabody, MA) gave the Monks hope with a one-out single, but Colby-Sawyer's reliever shut the door, retiring the final two batters to end it.
Saint Joseph's outhit Colby-Sawyer 15-13, led by a big day at the plate from Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME), who went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Dylan Brander (Merrimack, NH) added a 3-for-4 effort with two RBIs and a triple. Wilhelm and Carlisle each had two hits and drove in two.
Jack Dyer (Medford, MA) was tagged with the loss despite allowing just one run over two innings of relief.
With the loss, the Monks finish their season 20-18.
