STANDISH, Maine – University of New England (1-0-0) defeated Saint Joseph's College (0-1-0), 2-0, in what was the 2025 season-opener for both teams in non-conference women's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Nor'easters grabbed a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when senior Kylie Curtin (Loudon, N.H.) hit pay dirt off a Lindsey Butler (Pelham, N.H.) pass 8:26 after the opening whistle. The 1-0 edge held until the 35th minute when junior Ashley Clark (Windham, Maine) connected off passes from Karley Belisle (Plainfield, Conn.) and Amy Forrest (Hebron, Conn.).
The Monks' best scoring opportunity came late in the game when senior Lelia Weir (Bar Harbor, Maine) steered a free kick towards the top left corner of the net that was tipped away by UNE sophomore keeper Haley Coombs (Greenland, N.H.) with 1:25 remaining.
TEAM STATS:
UNE held the lead in shots (18-4) and shots on goal (9-3) while both teams were awarded three corner kicks in the 2025 opener.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC sophomore Ashlyn Guerette (Merrimack, N.H.) made seven saves – including several acrobatic stops 0 in a losing effort while Coombs tallied three saves in the clean-sheet performance.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 14-17-4 in the history of the series with University of New England. The Nor'easters have now defeated the Monks in five-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2021 season.
