Monks’ Rally Falls Short Against Bulldogs, 3-2

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (5-6, 2-2 GNAC) fell to Dean College (8-3, 4-1 GNAC), 3-2, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action on Wednesday evening at the SJC Athletics Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Dean opened the scoring at 4:32 when Hailey Lamping converted an Emily Yazzetti assist. Katrina Lee added an unassisted tally at 26:15 to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Monks increased the pressure after the break, outshooting Dean 8-2 in the third quarter. Sophomore Myia SeeHusen (Corinna, Maine) cut the deficit to 2-1 with her third goal of the season at 36:03, capping a flurry of SJC attempts following a penalty corner.

Saint Joseph's continued to pursue the equalizer, but Lamping scored her second goal at 57:08, just two seconds after a Dean shot struck the post, to restore the visitors' two-goal advantage.

The Monks answered 19 seconds later when freshman Macy Hickey (West Gardiner, Maine) netted her second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine).

Saint Joseph's had another chance to tie the contest in the final minute, but a shot by freshman Lily Huntley (Wilton, Maine) was saved at 59:17, and Dean held on for the victory.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (19-12) and shots on goal (11-10), while Dean led in penalty corners (9-6) in the conference contest.

THE KEEPERS:

Senior Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) recorded six saves in 60 minutes for the Monks. Dean goalkeeper Sara Gardner made eight saves in the victory.

Junior Gabriella Thomas (Lewiston, Maine) added a defensive save for Saint Joseph's during the second quarter.

McLaughlin's second save of the evening, made at 21:26 in the second quarter, was the 200th of her collegiate career. She became the sixth goalkeeper in Saint Joseph's field hockey history to reach the milestone and finished the contest with 204 career saves.
