STANDISH, Maine – Joseph Cassidy, President of Saint Joseph's College of Maine, has announced that Mike McDevitt '83 and Will Sanborn '86 have been elevated to the roles of Co-Directors of Athletics.
Both men are Saint Joseph's alumni and longtime pillars of the SJC athletics department. Few duos can match their combined experience and shared history: McDevitt has worked in collegiate athletics for 42 years, while Sanborn has served as a coach and/or administrator at Saint Joseph's for 36 years—most of those seasons alongside McDevitt.
Across 79 combined academic years as student-athletes, assistants, and head coaches, the pair has participated in 2,918 events, totaling 1,961 victories and a .672 winning percentage.
"Mike McDevitt and Will Sanborn are Saint Joseph's through and through," said Cassidy. "They've poured themselves into our institution for decades—as coaches, as leaders, and as mentors—and they've done it the right way. They care deeply about our students and about the Saint Joseph's community, and they've built something we can all be proud of. Most importantly, they provide the steady, familiar leadership that keeps Monk Athletics grounded and moving forward, while also guiding us in new and exciting ways rooted in our traditions. I'm excited to see them take on the roles of Co-Directors of Athletics and keep Monk Athletics moving forward."
McDevitt stepped away from coaching last spring after 33 seasons leading the Monks' women's basketball program and has served as Saint Joseph's associate director of athletics since 2009, with a primary focus on fundraising and compliance.
A 1983 graduate with a degree in business administration, McDevitt joined the men's basketball staff as an assistant coach for three seasons before beginning a 16-year stint as head coach of the women's program. He later spent six seasons at University of Southern Maine—including a term as the Huskies' interim head coach in 2008–09—before returning to his alma mater in 2009.
Sanborn, now in his 34th year as head coach of the Saint Joseph's baseball program, will continue to lead the Royal Blue nine while taking on Co-Director of Athletics responsibilities. He has also served in several administrative roles within the department, including assistant director of athletics and, most recently, senior associate director of athletics, with an emphasis on student-athlete recruitment strategies.
McDevitt concluded his head coaching career with a 667–231 (.743) record, reached 20 wins in 23 different seasons, and never endured a losing season. One of the most accomplished coaches in NCAA Division III women's basketball history, he guided the Monks to 19 championships—including six GNAC titles—and 14 national tournament appearances split evenly between the NAIA and NCAA Division III.
After starring on the SJC baseball team for three years, Sanborn returned as an assistant coach for two seasons (1991–92), helping the Monks capture NAIA New England titles in both years, before being named head coach in the fall of 1992. He has since compiled an 851–487–6 (.635) career record, led Saint Joseph's to 21 championships, and guided the Monks to nine NCAA Division III national tournament appearances.
A four-year starter for the Monks' men's basketball program, McDevitt totaled 1,381 points, 674 rebounds, and 226 assists while helping Saint Joseph's post a 65–38 (.631) record. He was inducted into the Saint Joseph's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
A three-year starting outfielder, Sanborn graduated cum laude in 1986 with a history degree after appearing in 110 games and batting .279 (80-for-287) with 98 runs scored. As a senior, he helped lead Saint Joseph's to the program's first-ever New England championship.
Sanborn's accomplishments have also been recognized statewide, as he was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.
