AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College swept Emerson College in a RussMatt Central Florida Invitational baseball doubleheader on Monday, defeating the Lions 10-3 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap to improve to 8-0 on the season.
Saint Joseph's totaled 15 hits and 14 runs across the two wins, while the pitching staff combined for 13 innings and 14 strikeouts on the day. Emerson stayed within striking distance throughout the twinbill, but the Monks delivered the bigger innings and got timely shutdown pitching to finish off the sweep.
GAME ONE – Saint Joseph's 10, Emerson 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Emerson grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the first and added another in the second, but the Monks answered both times to quickly draw even. Sophomore Nic Frink (Scarborough, Maine) tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, and Saint Joseph's leveled the score again in the second when senior Ryan Kastle (Concord, N.H.) came home on a wild pitch.
The Monks moved in front for good in the fourth inning. Sophomore Connor Finn (Kingston, Mass.) worked a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by senior Luke Doughty (York, Maine), who later crossed the plate on a Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, Mass.) fielder's choice to make it 4-2.
Emerson cut the deficit to one in the fifth, but Saint Joseph's answered immediately when Frink scored on a balk in the bottom half of the frame. The Monks then broke the game open with a five-run sixth. Doughty led off with a single and later scored, freshman Theo Masella (Manchester, Mass.) came home on a throwing error, Frink crossed the plate again later in the inning, and Finn capped the rally with a two-run single to center for the 10-3 final.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's struck first in the top of the opening inning when Frink came around to score on a balk after being hit by a pitch, stealing second, and moving to third on another balk.
Emerson answered with single runs in the second and fourth innings to claim a 2-1 lead, but the Monks responded with the decisive rally in the fifth. Senior Michael Richards (Melrose, Mass.) worked a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Sophomore Nick Villano (Peabody, Mass.) delivered an RBI single through the left side and Finn followed with an RBI infield single to give Saint Joseph's a 4-2 cushion.
The Lions plated one run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth, but senior Ryan Thurber (South Portland, Maine) shut the door from there, retiring all six batters he faced over the final two innings to preserve the one-run victory and complete the sweep.
