Monks Split on Second Day of Spring Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College split a pair of games in THE Spring Games action on Monday at the Diamond Plex, defeating Washington College, 9-4, before falling to Husson University, 9-1, in five innings.

The Monks totaled 12 hits in the win over Washington and used a five-run second inning plus a four-run sixth to pull away. In game two, Husson jumped in front early and kept Saint Joseph's in check to hand the Monks a split on the day.

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph's def. Washington College, 9-4

Washington struck first in the top of the second when Julia Weglarz walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Becca Foulk's RBI fielder's choice.

Saint Joseph's answered immediately with a five-run bottom of the second to seize control. Senior Anna Gilbert (Gray, Maine) started the rally with a single and sophomore Addison French (Rochester, N.H.) followed with a base hit before freshman Jaylah Trottier (Biddeford, Maine) tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice. Freshman Kiera Gabric (Hampden, Maine) then doubled home a run, sophomore Makayla Quintal (Gorham, Maine) dropped down a bunt single to drive in another, and Gabric later scored on a first and third double steal. Senior Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, Maine) added an RBI groundout to cap the inning and give the Monks a 5-1 lead.

The Shorewomen chipped away in the fifth. Jenna Harper doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on a Saint Joseph's throwing error. Cece Johnston followed later in the inning with an RBI single to bring Washington within 5-3.

Washington made it a one-run game in the sixth when Mia Filliben singled, moved up on a groundout and wild pitch, and scored on a Grace Allen RBI single.

The Monks responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Gabric and Quintal opened the frame with back-to-back singles before senior Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) singled in a run. Junior Kryslin Stearns (Concord, N.H.) followed with an RBI fielder's choice, and Gilbert delivered the big blow with a two-run single to left for the final 9-4 margin.

Saint Joseph's broke through in the top of the fourth. Tirrell drew a leadoff walk, freshman Jayden Sullivan (Hancock, Maine) reached on a fielder's choice, and Quintal dropped down a bunt single that plated Tirrell to cut the deficit to 5-1.

Husson answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth, as King tripled to left and scored on a Tainter groundout to push the lead to 6-1. The Eagles then ended the game with a three-run fifth.
