Monks & Blue Jays Split Conference Set

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (24-8, 9-5 GNAC) split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (20-11, 12-4 GNAC) on Sunday afternoon at Larry Mahaney Diamond. The Blue Jays rallied for a 7-5 victory in the opener before the Monks answered with a 10-6 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE – University of Saint Joseph 7, Saint Joseph's 5

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's broke through with a four-run third inning. Freshman Theo Masella (Manchester, Mass.) singled to open the frame and came home when sophomore Connor Finn (Kingston, Mass.) reached on a throwing error. Junior Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Nick Brindle (Pittsfield, Mass.) followed with RBI singles, and sophomore Nic Frink (Scarborough, Maine) and senior Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, Conn.) added run-scoring hits as the Monks grabbed a 4-0 advantage.

The Blue Jays answered with three runs in the fourth on RBI singles from senior Joseph Fritz (Tampa, Fla.), senior JJ Fox (Killingworth, Conn.), and senior Jack Kane (West Hartford, Conn.), but senior Michael Richards (Melrose, Mass.) responded with a solo homer in the bottom half to push the Monks back in front, 5-3.

USJ seized control in the sixth. Junior Tyler Carlstrom (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Fritz followed with a single, and Fox brought home a run on a fielder's choice. Kane then singled, senior Ryan Quinn (Middletown, Conn.) walked, junior Sam Balducci (South Windsor, Conn.) singled in the tying run, and senior Ryan Shaw (Ellington, Conn.) lined a two-run single to left to give the Blue Jays a 7-5 lead. Saint Joseph's put a runner aboard in the seventh, but USJ closed out the opener.
