Monks Sweep Cadets in GNAC Twinbill, 6-3 & 8-6

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Saint Joseph's College (23-7, 8-4 GNAC swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader from Norwich University (7-18, 4-8 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon at Garrity Field, claiming a 6-3 victory in the opener before rallying late for an 8-6 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE - Saint Joseph's 6, Norwich 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's struck first in the second inning when sophomore Nic Frink (Scarborough, Maine) blasted a solo home run to right field and sophomore Nick Villano (Peabody, Mass.) followed later in the frame with an RBI double to give the Monks a 2-0 lead.

The Monks continued to build their advantage in the third and fourth innings. Sophomore Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, N.H.) delivered an RBI double in the third and junior Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, Mass.) lined a run-scoring single in the fourth that plated two runs after a Norwich throwing error, pushing the lead to 5-0.

Norwich answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Saint Joseph's added an insurance run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Villano that scored Frink. The Monks' bullpen took it from there to secure the 6-3 victory.

GAME TWO - Saint Joseph's 8, Norwich 6

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's jumped ahead early in the nightcap as O'Leary reached base to start the game and later scored on a run-scoring double by sophomore Nick Brindle (Pittsfield, Mass.). Junior Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, Conn.) followed with an RBI single to give the Monks a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.

Norwich chipped away and eventually moved in front, scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 6-5 lead.

The Monks responded in the seventh inning when Wilhelm doubled to put two runners in scoring position and Villano delivered a clutch two-run single up the middle to put Saint Joseph's back on top, 7-6. Saint Joseph's added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI fielder's choice by Wilhelm before closing out the win.
