Monks Sweep Chargers, 9-1 & 7-4

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (14-16, 7-5 GNAC) swept a GNAC softball doubleheader from Colby-Sawyer College (1-12, 1-8 GNAC) on Sunday afternoon at Richard W. Bailey Field, posting a 9-1 five-inning victory in the opener before rallying for a 7-4 win in game two.

The Monks pounded out 22 hits across the twinbill and used a dominant performance in game one before erasing an early three-run deficit in the nightcap to improve to 7-5 in conference play.

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph's 9, Colby-Sawyer 1 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Colby-Sawyer struck first in the opening inning on an RBI double by freshman Kyla Angell (North Providence, R.I.), but the Monks answered with two runs in the second on a two-run single by senior Anna Gilbert (Gray, Maine). Saint Joseph's added three more in the third, highlighted by an RBI single from sophomore Makayla Quintal (Gorham, Maine), and broke the game open in the fourth when senior Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, Maine) launched a three-run homer. The Monks tacked on the game-ending run in the fifth.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Colby-Sawyer built a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by freshman Kaylee Scott (Virginia Beach, Va.) and pushed its advantage to 4-1 through four innings. The Monks turned the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five times to move in front for good. Trottier drove in one run, Tirrell followed with a two-run single, and Bouchard capped the outburst with a two-run hit. Saint Joseph's added an insurance run in the sixth and kept the Chargers off the board the rest of the way.
