Panthers Defeat Monks in Non-Conference Match, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – Plymouth State University (6-3) defeated Saint Joseph's College (3-5), 3-0, in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening.

The Panthers secured the straight-set victory by scores of 25-15, 25-14, and 25-18.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Plymouth State established an early advantage with a 9-0 run in the opening set. Saint Joseph's answered with three consecutive points, including back-to-back kills from senior outside hitter Greta Mackintosh (Plymouth, Mass.), to cut the deficit to 12-7. The Panthers maintained control down the stretch, however, and claimed the first frame, 25-15.

The visitors again pulled ahead early in the second set, building a 16-4 lead. The Monks responded with a late push highlighted by three kills from first-year Jayda Quigley (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) and two from Mackintosh, but Plymouth State closed out a 25-14 decision.

Saint Joseph's produced its strongest finish in the third set. Trailing 21-14, the Monks scored four of the next six points behind two Plymouth State errors, a Mackintosh kill, and a service ace from sophomore Sophia Denham (Barrington, R.I.). The Panthers halted the rally and recorded the final two points to complete the sweep.

TEAM STATS:

Plymouth State held a 32-26 advantage in kills and posted a .212 hitting percentage, while Saint Joseph's hit .063.

The Panthers registered seven service aces and four total blocks.

Plymouth State narrowly led the defensive battle with a 57-53 digs advantage.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Mackintosh led the Monks with nine kills and added four digs and a service ace.
  • Quigley recorded five kills on 15 attempts for a team-high .267 hitting percentage while contributing five digs.
  • Senior right-side hitter Kylie Giakoumis (Middletown, N.Y.) tallied four kills and a block assist.
  • Sophomore setter Maddie Garrett (Euless, Texas) posted a team-high 17 assists and a match-high 16 digs.
  • Sophomore Livy McDonough (West Friendship, Md.) added nine digs, while senior Jessica Christman (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with eight.

LEADERS – PLYMOUTH STATE:

  • Annalyn Cahill and Sya McKay paced the Panthers with eight kills apiece.
  • Alexa Marucci collected three service aces and 12 digs.
  • Christa Imbriano led all players with 22 digs.
