Monks Defeat Salem State in Four Sets

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (6-6, 2-1 GNAC) defeated Salem State University (0-11, 0-0 MASCAC), 3-1, Thursday evening in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Harold Alfond Center. The Monks won by scores of 25-22, 24-26, 25-17 and 25-19.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The opening set was tied at 18 before kills from sophomore Mary McNulty (Warwick, R.I.), freshman Sophia Fallon (New Canaan, Conn.) and senior Greta Mackintosh (Plymouth, Mass.) helped the Monks build a 24-19 lead. Salem State closed within two, but SJC took the set, 25-22.

Saint Joseph's rallied from a 16-10 deficit in the second and moved ahead 24-23 on a Mackintosh kill. The Vikings tied it at 24 and scored the next two points to even the match.

The Monks responded by opening a 10-3 lead in the third set. Senior Kylie Giakoumis (Middletown, N.Y.) finished the 25-17 win with a kill. SJC then overcame an early 8-5 deficit in the fourth, took the lead at 10-9 on a kill from freshman Lauren Dunbar (Gorham, Maine), and closed out the match on Fallon's 12th kill.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in kills (51-28), hitting percentage (.203-.101) and total blocks (7-2), while Salem State had a 54-52 edge in digs.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Fallon led the Monks with 12 kills on 21 attempts - with only one error - and hit .524.
  • McNulty recorded 10 kills on 22 attempts and hit .273.
  • Giakoumis added nine kills, while freshman Lindsay Levesque (Arundel, Maine) had six.
  • Sophomore Livy McDonough (West Friendship, Md.) posted a team-high 12 digs.
  • Sophomore Maddie Garrett (Euless, Texas) handed out 23 assists, while junior Riley Greenley (Newark, Del.) added 13 assists and a team-high three service aces.

LEADERS – SALEM STATE:

  • Sabina Kamanda and Khloe Camblin led the Vikings with nine kills apiece. Kamanda also recorded 13 digs.
  • Azriella Jorge posted a team-high 14 digs.
  • Celia Carbone handed out 18 assists and added 11 digs.
  • Camblin, Addison Campbell and Ivy Mattos recorded two service aces each.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's improved to 7-11 all-time against Salem State. The Monks have won the last three meetings with the Vikings, dating to a 3-0 victory in 2009.

Saint Joseph's travels to Norwich University for a GNAC match on Saturday, September 26. Opening serve is set for 12:00 PM.
