STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (2-2-5, 1-0-4 GNAC) played Albertus Magnus College (4-4-1, 2-0-1 GNAC) to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Senior goalkeeper Alex Bachmann (Scarborough, Maine) made six first-half saves to keep the match scoreless at the break. The Monks put two shots on goal in the opening minutes of the second half, but Albertus Magnus took the lead when Lorenzo Lauria scored off a perfect Kalonji Cowan crossing pass in the box at 49:08.
Junior Nick Marion (Windham, Maine) created the equalizer with a determined run into the box, where his shot was saved before the Albertus Magnus goalkeeper brought him down. Marion's effort set up a penalty kick that freshman Damir Brkic (South Portland, Maine) buried in the lower left corner of the net at 62:28 to tie the match.
Both sides had chances to break the deadlock. Marion forced another save in the 73rd minute, while Bachmann stopped a shot in the 84th to preserve the draw.
TEAM STATS:
The teams finished even in shots (18-18) and corner kicks (10-10), while Albertus Magnus held a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal.
THE KEEPERS:
Bachmann made 11 saves for Saint Joseph's while Albertus Magnus goalkeeper Patrick Cavalieri recorded seven stops in the deadlock.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Saint Joseph's is now 11-10-1 all-time against Albertus Magnus. Saturday's result was the first draw in the 22-match series.
