STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-1) suffered a 7-2 loss to Springfield College (2-0) in non-conference field hockey action at the SJC Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Ava Coppola opened the scoring for Springfield at the 5:57 mark of the first quarter. Sophia Sares doubled the visitors' lead at 10:01 off a feed from Clare Moore.
Coppola scored her second goal of the game in the second quarter, converting passes from Maggie Horn and Sarah Goldstein at 22:21 to give Springfield a 3-0 halftime advantage.
Sares extended the lead with an Ava Coppola-assisted goal at 32:53, but the Monks responded when sophomore forward Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine) scored later in the 33rd minute.
Rachel Simkewicz converted a penalty stroke at 37:39 before Saint Joseph's answered just nine seconds later, with Markham scoring on a penalty stroke to make it a 5-2 game.
Lily Bialack added a goal off another Coppola assist at 40:12. Samara Skully, assisted by Amber Wolkner, completed the scoring at 50:05.
THE KEEPERS:
Senior goalkeeper Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) made six saves over the first 45 minutes for Saint Joseph's. Making her collegiate debut, first-year Adrianna Pettengill (Belgrade, Maine) played the fourth quarter and stopped one of the two shots she faced.
Springfield goalkeeper Sam Orcutt recorded two saves.
TEAM STATS:
Springfield held advantages in shots (22-6), shots on goal (17-4), and penalty corners (10-6). Saint Joseph's recorded three defensive saves, with junior Gabriella Thomas (Lewiston, Maine) collecting two and junior Zoey Lailer (Limington, Maine) adding one.
The Monks generated four shots and scored both of their goals during the third quarter.
