BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sixth-ranked Babson College (2-1) scored once in each of the first two quarters and added a pair of third-quarter goals to defeat Saint Joseph's College (1-2), 4-0, in non-conference field hockey action at MacDowell Field on Tuesday evening. Babson entered the contest ranked sixth in the NFHCA Preseason Poll.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Penny Baroni opened the scoring off an Emma Smith assist at the 5:48 mark and doubled the Beavers' advantage with an unassisted goal just 1:23 into the second quarter.
The Monks generated their best offensive opportunity early in the third stanza. Junior Zoey Lailer (Limington, Maine) earned a penalty corner and sophomore Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine) followed with a shot that sailed wide.
Babson added two goals late in the third quarter, as Helen DiGiovanni scored off a Taylor Shoflick feed at 39:47 before Grace Mullaney capped the scoring with a goal 80 seconds later.
Senior goalkeeper Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) made seven saves during the third quarter and added another stop in the fourth as the Monks held the nationally ranked Beavers scoreless over the final 15 minutes.
THE KEEPERS:
McLaughlin finished with nine saves in the setback. Madison Tibbals and Carly Spinner combined to earn the shutout for Babson.
TEAM STATS:
Babson held advantages in shots (20-1), shots on goal (13-0), and penalty corners (16-2).
