Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Monks and Mariners Battle to 1-1 Draw

CASTINE, Maine – Freshman midfielder Damir Brkic (South Portland, Maine) scored his second goal in as many games as Saint Joseph's College (1-0-1) played Maine Maritime Academy (0-1-1) to a 1-1 draw in non-conference men's soccer action at Ritchie Field on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Brkic opened the scoring just 2:49 into the contest, finding the back of the net with an unassisted strike to provide the Monks with an early 1-0 advantage.

Saint Joseph's carried the lead into intermission after outshooting Maine Maritime by a 6-2 margin during the opening half. Senior defender Diego Robinson (Hinesburg, Vt.) nearly doubled the advantage in the 10th minute, but Mariners goalkeeper Reagan Moynihan turned away his attempt.

Maine Maritime tied the game shortly after the break when Hunter Crea converted a Piercen Fisher feed in the 49th minute.

The Monks earned a chance to reclaim the lead in the 65th minute, but sophomore defender Zach Britton's (Scarborough, Maine) penalty-kick attempt was denied to preserve the 1-1 score.

Saint Joseph's played the majority of the second half with just 10 players following a red card issued to Britton following the PK bid. Despite the disadvantage, the Monks limited the Mariners to one shot over the remainder of the contest and generated two attempts during the closing seven minutes.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (13-6) and shots on goal (4-1), while Maine Maritime finished with a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. The Monks committed 14 fouls compared with 12 by the Mariners.

THE KEEPERS:

Senior goalkeeper Alex Bachmann (Scarborough, Maine) allowed one goal over 90 minutes for the Monks. Moynihan made two saves for Maine Maritime, while the Mariners also registered a team save.
