STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-1-1) suffered a 3-2 setback at the hands of No. 23 UMass.-Boston (2-0) in non-conference men's soccer action at the Saint Joseph's Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
UMass.-Boston, ranked 23rd in the 2026 United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, applied pressure throughout the opening half and nearly grabbed an early lead, hitting both the crossbar and post. Senior goalkeeper Alex Bachmann (Scarborough, Maine) kept the Beacons off the board with a handful of incredible saves, helping the Monks reach halftime in a scoreless tie.
Saint Joseph's broke through in the 53rd minute when junior Godin Ndayishimiye (Bujumbura, Burundi) scored his first goal of the season off a feed from junior Nick Marion (Windham, Maine).
The lead lasted just over three minutes, as Cam Ramos converted a penalty kick at the 55:55 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
The Monks moved back in front in the 66th minute when sophomore Mattheus Silva (Acton, Mass.) connected with first-year Khalil Ghosheh (Scarborough, Maine), who buried his first collegiate goal to make it a 2-1 contest.
Saint Joseph's carried the lead into the final seven minutes, but a pair of defensive lapses allowed the Beacons to score twice in a span of 26 seconds. Ramos netted the equalizer at 83:14 before setting up John Arruda for the eventual game-winner at 83:40.
THE KEEPERS:
Bachmann turned away 13 shots in the loss, including 10 saves during the second half. Mario Hajhdi made one save to earn the victory for UMass.-Boston.
TEAM STATS:
The Beacons held advantages in shots (25-6), shots on goal (18-3), and corner kicks (11-2) in the victory.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 1-7-0 in the history of the series with UMass.-Boston, a team the Monks last played in 2014 (4-0 loss).
