Baseball Sweeps GNAC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's (13-8, 4-0 GNAC) scored 27 runs and rapped 26 hits in a sweep over Rivier College (1-13, 0-4 GNAC) at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Saturday afternoon. Senior right fielder Todd Keneborus (Hollis Center, ME/Cheverus) went 4-6 with four runs, six RBI, a double, triple and home run in the conference twinbill.

GAME ONE

St. Joe's, the away team at Mahaney on this day as the games were originally slated to be played on the Raiders' home field, led 4-0 before busting out with 12 runs – 10 with two out – off nine hits and two Rivier miscues in the top of the fourth en route to a 21-1 triumph. Included in the scoring barrage was a two-run home run hit by junior shortstop Dan Achorn (Bow, NH), the first jack of his career.

Five SJC batters registered two or more hits in the lopsided win. First baseman Mike Pratt '13 (Dartmouth, MA) was 3-3 with two runs, two RBI and two doubles, Keneborus went 2-2 with two runs, two RBI and a triple and second baseman Chris Campbell '11 (Rochester, NH) was 2-3 with three runs, a double and a stolen base. Catcher Alex Lorenc '14 (Nanuet, NY) went 2-3 with a run scored, three RBI and a double and left fielder Sam Butts '13 (Saco, ME) was 2-2 with a run, two RBI and a two-bagger.

St. Joe's starting pitcher Tyler Laverriere '13 (Biddeford, ME) improved to 2-1 on the year after fanning four batters and allowing two hits in four innings of work. Reliever Sam Stauber '14 (Cumberland, ME) yielded one run off two hits with a pair of K's in two frames and Chris Bryant '14 (Gray, ME) tossed a perfect seventh inning and added a strikeout in his first collegiate appearance.

Rivier starter Kyle Bowser '13 (Newington, NH) suffered the loss after allowing four runs off five hits and a walk in three innings of work. Raiders reliever Kevin Romero '12 (Waterbury, CT) gave up 16 runs (eight earned) off 11 hits, two walks and five hit batsmen in four innings.

Rivier center fielder Tyler Eaton '11 (Waterville, ME) went 2-2 and third baseman Nathan Knoetig '14 (Manchester, NH) hit a solo home run in the losing effort.

GAME TWO

Saint Joseph's held a slim 3-2 lead after three innings but plated one in the fifth and three in the seventh to collect a 7-2 victory and the GNAC doubleheader sweep.

Pratt singled home the first SJC run in the top of the first and, with the game tied 1-1, Keneborus drove a two-run shot over the right field wall in the top of the third to lift the hosts to a 3-1 cushion.

The Raiders managed to score on an outfield error in the bottom of the third and the 3-2 score would stand until the fifth when Achorn scampered home on a wild pitch to make it a 4-2 game.

Keneborus and Pratt both registered two-run doubles in the top of the seventh to provide the Monks with some separation and, eventually, the 7-2 win.

Pratt, who hit four two-baggers on the afternoon and has 14 doubles through 21 games, went 3-4 with two RBI and two two-base hits in the nightcap. Keneborus was 2-4 with two runs, a double, a home run and four RBI, Achorn was 2-4 with three runs, a double and a stolen base, and Campbell went 2-4 with a pair of runs and two swiped bags.

SJC starter Nick Whittaker '14 (Yarmouth, ME) worked six innings and allowed just two hits and a pair of unearned runs while fanning eight batters in what was his first collegiate victory. Bryant tossed another scoreless seventh and fanned a batter to close out the contest.

Romero scored both of the Rivier runs and stole a base in the loss. Raiders starting pitcher Ford Coats '13 (Raymond, NH) suffered the loss after yielding seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits with six K's in a complete game effort.

With the sweep, Saint Joseph's improves to 12-1 in the history of the series with Rivier College. The Monks have defeated the Raiders in seven consecutive meetings dating back to the 2008 campaign.

Saint Joseph's will play at Johnson & Wales University in a key conference twinbill Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM.
