Cougars Stun Monks in OT, 2-1

Box Score

PORTLAND, Maine – Junior midfielder Marissa Robinson (Bear, Del.) scored 1:56 into overtime to propel Kean University (5-2) past Saint Joseph's College (2-1), 2-1, in a non-conference field hockey contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Saint Joseph's staked and early lead, as senior forward Effie Drew (Portland, Maine) scored off a Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) pass just 2:17 into the game. The 1-0 edge remained until the 64th minute, when Kean freshman Krista LaMaina (Oaklyn, N.J.) potted her fifth goal of the season on a pass from Robinson, a play that ultimately forced extra time.

The Cougars applied plenty of pressure early in overtime, which features 7v7 play, as the visitors were awarded a pair of corners and attempted three shots in just under two minutes. Robinson scored the winner when she collected a rebound off her own shot, as her initial attempt ricocheted off a Monk stick, and slammed the bouncing ball past SJC netminder Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) to end the game in dramatic fashion.

Overall, Kean held an 11-5 lead in shots and a decided 12-2 advantage in penalty corners on the afternoon. Astbury made four saves in the loss while Cougars keeper Katie DiCarlo (Shamong, N.J.) recorded a trio of stops in the victory. Kean senior defender Stephanie Rios (Freehold, N.J.) also added a pivotal defensive save on a shot by Drew with 11:19 remaining in regulation.

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 1-2 in the history of the series with Kean University, a team the Monks defeated by the same 2-1 margin, in overtime, in the last meeting between the programs. That contest took place in Standish on September 10th, 2011.

Saint Joseph's returns to play next Saturday with a non-conference contest at New England College starting at 1:00 PM. Kean hosts Keystone College on Tuesday at 7:30 PM.
